Computing

Our Computing curriculum supports pupils in becoming confident, capable and responsible users of technology from EYFS through to Year 6.

In the Early Years, computing sits within Understanding the World, where children explore technology through play and everyday experiences. They use simple devices and age-appropriate programs to develop early skills, understand cause and effect, and build curiosity, language and problem-solving through hands-on exploration.

As pupils progress, learning is carefully sequenced and delivered through PurpleMash, ensuring knowledge and skills build securely over time.

Across the school, pupils use iPads, Chromebooks and desktop computers to engage in a wide range of computing experiences. They learn to design, write and debug programs, create digital content, and work with data. PurpleMash provides a consistent platform to practise and deepen understanding. Technology also supports adaptive teaching and inclusion, with a range of hardware and software enabling all pupils to access learning and demonstrate their understanding in different ways.

Online safety is a key thread running through our curriculum and is closely linked to our PSHE curriculum, particularly in promoting safety and wellbeing. Pupils are taught how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly, understanding how to keep themselves and others safe in an increasingly digital world, as well as how this links to their wider personal, social and emotional development.

Our elected Digital Leaders pupil group plays an important role in promoting the positive use of technology across the school. These pupils help to support online safety awareness, model responsible digital behaviour, assist with technology around the school and contribute ideas to further develop computing and digital learning opportunities for their peers.

Through computing, pupils develop problem-solving, logical thinking and creativity, working both independently and collaboratively to refine their ideas.

By Year 6, pupils are confident, digitally literate learners, equipped to use technology safely, effectively and creatively in the next stage of their education and beyond.
