Science
Welcome to our Science journey at Jotmans Hall Primary School, where curiosity, exploration and confidence inspire every child to develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. From their first scientific discoveries in EYFS to becoming knowledgeable and independent young scientists in Year 6, we encourage all children to question, investigate and make meaningful connections with the world they live in.
In EYFS, children begin their scientific journey through play-based learning and hands-on experiences. They explore the natural world, observe seasonal changes, investigate materials and learn about living things through first-hand experiences. Through discovering, exploring and talking about what they notice, children develop their natural sense of wonder and begin to build the foundations of scientific thinking.
As children progress through Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, their scientific knowledge and enquiry skills grow in depth and complexity. They build secure foundations in understanding plants, animals, materials and everyday phenomena before developing their knowledge of more complex scientific concepts. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, children revisit and build upon prior learning, enabling them to develop a secure understanding of key scientific ideas while learning how to work scientifically through observing, questioning, predicting, testing, recording and evaluating.
At Jotmans Hall Primary School, science is brought to life through practical investigations, collaborative learning and real-world experiences. Children are encouraged to think critically, ask thoughtful questions and explore scientific concepts through enquiry-based learning. Teachers use discussion, modelling and hands-on investigations to help children make sense of their learning and develop confidence in explaining their ideas using scientific vocabulary.
As you journey through our school, you'll see children actively investigating, exploring and collaborating with their peers. You'll hear them asking questions, sharing ideas, making predictions and discussing evidence to support their thinking. Science lessons are filled with opportunities for discovery, problem-solving and learning from both successes and mistakes, helping children to develop resilience and independence alongside their scientific understanding.
Through these experiences, children develop confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning. They learn to think critically, evaluate evidence and approach the world with an enquiring mind. We want every child to see themselves as a scientist—someone who can explore, discover and contribute to understanding the world around them.
By the time they reach Year 6, our pupils are confident, reflective and knowledgeable young scientists. They can apply their scientific understanding across a range of contexts, communicate their ideas effectively and use evidence to justify their conclusions. Most importantly, they leave Jotmans Hall Primary School with a lasting curiosity about the world and an enthusiasm for future scientific learning.
Science at Jotmans Hall Primary School is more than a subject—it is a journey of discovery.
