Writing

At our school, writing is developed as a key life skill, enabling pupils to communicate with clarity, creativity and confidence from EYFS to Year 6.

In the early years, children begin their writing journey through talk, storytelling, mark-making and play. Rooted in Communication and Language and Physical Development, these experiences support children to explore ideas, develop fine motor control and begin giving meaning to their marks.

As pupils progress, writing is taught through our Ready Steady Write approach, using high-quality texts to inspire and model strong writing. Children are guided through the writing process, developing their skills in grammar, punctuation and composition in a structured and purposeful way.

Across the school, pupils are supported through shared writing, model texts and vocabulary development, helping them to write for a range of audiences and purposes while building independence. You’ll see children discussing ideas, experimenting with language and reflecting on their work as they edit and improve, building confidence and resilience as writers.

By the end of Year 6, our pupils are confident writers who can clearly and effectively express their ideas with independence and creativity.

Writing at our school is more than putting words on a page—it is a way for children to share their voice and ideas.
