Reading
At our school, reading is developed as a key life skill, enabling pupils to understand, interpret and enjoy a wide range of texts with confidence from EYFS to Year 6.
In the early years, children develop a love of reading through stories, talk and play. This is rooted in the EYFS area of Communication and Language, where children build listening, attention and understanding skills, alongside early phonics teaching that supports them to recognise sounds and begin blending words.
As pupils progress, reading is supported through structured approaches. From the end of Year 2, we use Little Wandle Fluency to develop accuracy, pace and expression. When ready, pupils move on to Fred’s Teaching, combining fluency with whole-class reading. Children move between these stages based on readiness, not age, ensuring appropriate challenge and support.
Across the school, pupils read a wide range of high-quality texts and develop key skills such as retrieval, inference and discussion, building both understanding and enjoyment. You’ll see children sharing ideas, questioning texts and explaining their thinking, developing confidence, curiosity and critical understanding as readers.
By the end of Year 6, our pupils are fluent, thoughtful readers who can engage with texts for a range of purposes with independence and enjoyment.
Reading at our school helps children make sense of the world, sparking curiosity and a lasting love of books.
