Happy Friday!

Another Great week in Cedar Class.

This week we have focused on telling the time and can read O'clock and Half past times! Any time you spot these times on the clock, make sure to ask your children.

This week we have learned;

'ph' as in dolphin

'ew' as in screw

'oe' as in toe

'au' as in haunt

'ey' as in key

By the end of next week, we will have learnt all the phonic sounds! Very exciting!

We will not be testing spellings in Cedar Class. Spellings can confuse children and I want to put as little pressure on them as possible whilst we can. This being said, 'Tricky Words' are a vital part of reading and should be practised at home. The phase 3 and 4 tricky words can be found in the back of your child's reading record (a separate stapled sheet).

Have a lovely weekend!

See you all on Monday!

We've had another awesome and busy week!

Monday we went on a trip to the local shops ready to write our information leaflets! It was very cold and windy but the children mostly managed to stay in good spirits. (hehe)

We drew the shops, found out information and drew a map of our journey. Thank you to all the parents and family members who joined us!

Today was Red Nose Day and the children looked fabulous in their red clothes. We had lots of fun sorting coins and we made a Cedar tree out of the coins the children had brought in. We Raised £50.09 in spare change! (This is before we added the £1's donated for non uniform)

We have learnt the following sounds this week

ue as in glue and avenue

aw as in claw

wh as in whisker

Thank you for your continued support.

Have a great weekend!

This week we have been extremely busy.

Tuesday saw us celebrating Pancake day and the children enjoyed both savoury and sweet pancakes at lunch  time (the evidence of which was written alllllll over their faces!) We flipped our phonic sound in frying pans to practise learning it! This week we have learned;

ea as in sea

oy as in boy

ir as in girl

Thursday was world book day, what incredible costumes! The children enjoyed a myriad of different activities, including designing their own front cover, looking at the features of non fiction books and writing their own blurbs, extreme reading and den making with Sycamore Class!

Then on Friday, We took part in Earth Hour, our Digital Leader Lily worked with the other Digital Leaders in the school to look at our energy consumption in the school. Lily was tasked wit turning off all our appliances! Lights, computers, monitors, plugs etc. With no lights and no computers, we decided to take our sketch books outside and have a go at sketching plants as part of our science topic 'Plants'. We found it tricky to draw what we saw, rather than what we thought we saw. This is something we will continue to practise!

Have a fantastic weekend! See you next week!

A calm environment

What a great first week back at school!

In maths, we have been looking at 3D shapes! We have been focussing on the faces, corners and vertices of 3d shapes and have enjoyed introducing our shapes to our friends. "This is Mr Cone, he has 1 flat face and 1 curved faces, 1 vertice and 1 corner".

In English we have been looking at Acrostic poems. We had a go at writing one about ourselves and then today we wrote one about 'Transport'. We have been talking about 'having a calm environment' when doing our work. Cedar class really enjoy turning off the lights and putting on fairy lights, music and calming visuals (such as a crackling fire or underwater scenes). This has really helped us focus. Check out the pictures.

In Phonics we have started phase 5! Your child now knows the following sounds and should be encouraged to identify these in words and begin to read them.

  • ay (as in play)
  • ou (as in loud)
  • ie (as in tie)

Next week we are excited to celebrate pancake day (Tuesday) and world book day (Thursday)!!

Big Write!

Happy Half Term!!

Cedar Class have worked so hard this half term and I am so proud of them!!

Thank you to everyone who came to parent's evening. It was lovely to meet you all properly and spend some quality time talking about the children's achievements together.

This week we have been writing alternative versions of the 3 little pigs. We looked at 'The 3 little Fish and the Big Bad Shark'. Ask your child to tell you their version!

We have sent home a sound mat and handwriting mat of all the sounds your children now know. They should be blending words with these sounds now. Any problems with how to sound them out check out geraldine giraffe on youtube and she will tell you everything you need to know!

Enjoy your hard earned week off and I look forward to seeing you back next week!
